A Surprise in My Basement

My hubby turned on the sprinkler system for our yard, as he does every year.

All of my quilting supplies, fabric for sale (sort of) and everything to do with that is in the basement. I get the basement and he gets the garage. Fair, correct?

So it's been a while since I've sold fabric in my shop. When I'm sewing I usually use an ironing station on the other side of the room and I take the same path all the time to get to it. Well, one day I was searching for a specific ruler and I took a different path to the other side of the room.

Quick side note: I have 5 cats. You'll understand in a second.

When I took the other path, I stepped in something wet. Of course, I thought that one of the cats had an accident. Hey, it happens. I had socks on, so I took the wet one off and smelled it (as you do). It smelled like nothing. Hmmm...

I walked over to the area where I had stepped in something wet and realized that there was quite a bit of liquid. Then I started looking around and noticed that all of the fabric in that whole section of the room had soaked up a LOT of water.

Apparently the sprinkler system had one tiny little screw that failed and it had been leaking for two weeks since we turned them on.

Bummer pie.

So now I have loads of bolts of fabric that got wet and we have to replace 5 Ikea bookshelves. The bookshelf situation is fine. Ikea bookshelves are pretty affordable. But I have no idea what I'm going to do with the fabric. I suppose I can still try to sell it if I disclose what happened and sell it cheap. I hope I don't have to sell it for less than what I paid for it, but that's a possibility.

Pretty sure the carpet is fine. We had space heaters on them any time we were home and awake.

So I guess the moral of this story is ... check the sprinkler system after turning it on at the start of every season.

xoxo

Yvette
